Cleared uses versus off-label uses

TMS devices are cleared by the FDA for specific uses, including major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxious depression, and smoking cessation, with adolescent use cleared as an adjunct for depression. Other uses discussed on this site — including PTSD, bipolar depression and others — are off-label. Off-label is legal and sometimes appropriate, but it means the FDA has not cleared a device for that use, and insurance is less likely to cover it. We label these distinctions on our condition pages.

Results vary

Published trial results describe groups of people, not individuals. No clinic can promise you a particular outcome, and we do not publish success-rate claims that a clinic cannot substantiate. TMS has known risks, including scalp discomfort, headache, and a rare risk of seizure. Discuss your full history — especially seizures, metal implants near the head, and current medications — with the treating clinician.
